- WHO?
YOUR NOTTING HILL PROFESSIONAL DOG TRAINER
My name is James Impey. I was born and raised in London, and dogs have been part of my life for as long as I can remember
My love for dogs began at an early age with my grandfather’s Husky–German Shepherd cross and grew through years of living with, caring for and working with dogs of different breeds, sizes and personalities
Today, as a professional dog trainer and behaviour specialist with Training Dog®, I help owners in Notting Hill W11 and Bayswater W2 with puppy training, everyday training and behavioural problems
DOG TRAINING IN NOTTING HILL & BAYSWATER
Every dog is different, which is why training needs to take into account the individual dog’s personality, experiences, environment and relationship with their owner.
I work with puppies, adolescent and adult dogs on areas including socialisation, recall, lead walking, overexcitement, barking, fear and insecurity, as well as more challenging behavioural problems.
I have particular experience working with reactive and aggressive dogs, helping them learn to respond differently to situations and triggers that would previously have caused a strong reaction
REACTIVE AND AGGRESSIVE DOGS
One of the principal techniques I use when working with reactivity towards other dogs is counter-conditioning through controlled exposure
We begin at a distance where the dog can see another dog without becoming overwhelmed or immediately reacting. Through carefully controlled encounters, we then gradually reduce that distance as the dog becomes more comfortable and learns to remain calm.
The process is progressive and always adapted to the individual dog. We don’t force the dog into situations they aren’t ready to cope with
Over time, the aim is for seeing and passing other dogs to become increasingly normal and manageable, rather than automatically triggering barking, lunging or aggressive behaviour
NERVOUS & ANXIOUS DOGS
Nervous and anxious dogs often need a patient and gradual approach. Fear and nervous behaviour can develop for many different reasons, including previous experiences, limited early socialisation or simply the individual dog’s personality and temperament
I begin at a level the dog is comfortable with, gradually introducing situations, people, dogs or environments they may find difficult. The dog is never forced into a situation they aren’t ready to cope with
Over time, the aim is to build confidence and help situations that previously felt stressful become increasingly familiar and manageable
EXPERIENCE WITH LARGER BREEDS
I also have particular experience working with larger and more powerful dogs, where behaviours such as pulling, lunging, jumping up or overexcitement can become especially difficult for an owner to manage
Training isn’t about competing with a dog’s physical strength. I work on communication, engagement, lead walking and impulse control, helping the dog understand what is expected and respond more reliably to their owner
As with all of my training, the approach is adapted to the individual dog, their personality, temperament and everyday environment
- Individual approach
Every dog is an individual, with their own personality, needs, experiences and temperament
- Positive method
Positive reinforcement makes your dog balanced, happy to learn and to please you, as you want loyalty and not fear
MY APPROACH TO DOG TRAINING
Good dog training isn’t about strength or simply teaching a collection of commands. It requires patience, observation, consistency and an understanding of why a dog is behaving in a particular way
Two dogs displaying what appears to be the same behaviour may be doing so for completely different reasons. My job is to understand the individual dog in front of me and develop a practical training programme that works in the situations they encounter in everyday life
Positive reinforcement plays an important role in my work, alongside clear communication, structure and practical training techniques appropriate to the individual dog
MORE THAN DOG TRAINING
Dogs have always meant much more to me than simply the work I do
One of my own rescue dogs became an enormously important part of my life after I lost my father at a young age, and that experience reinforced just how important the relationship between a dog and their family can become
That perspective still influences the way I work today. Behind every behavioural problem is also an owner who may be worried, frustrated or simply unsure about what to do next
For me, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing a dog become calmer and more confident while their owner begins to understand them better
ONE-TO-ONE DOG TRAINING
Training is provided one-to-one and adapted to your dog, your lifestyle and the problems you want to address
Sessions can take place at home and outdoors, allowing us to work on behaviour in the real situations where it matters
My main areas are Notting Hill W11 and Bayswater W2

The first appointment for every new dog is always a consultation
When booking a consultation or training session, you accept our cancellation policy
YOUR FIRST CONSULTATION
We will discuss your dog’s history, routine, environment and behaviour, while I observe your dog and their interaction with you. This allows me to understand the situation, identify the priorities and establish the most appropriate training programme
This initial assessment is particularly important with reactivity and aggression, where similar-looking behaviours can have very different causes
